Grosz, George

(26 jul. 1893, Berlín, Alemania–6 jul. 1959, Berlín Occidental).

Pintor, dibujante e ilustrador estadounidense de origen alemán. Después de haber estudiado arte en Dresde y Berlín, comenzó a vender caricaturas para revistas. Durante la primera guerra mundial sirvió en el ejército alemán. En 1917 fue dado de baja por incompetencia y se mudó a una buhardilla en Berlín donde instaló su taller. A fines de la guerra, ya había desarrollado un estilo gráfico que combinaba el uso expresivo de la línea con una feroz sátira social. Sus representaciones de la guerra y de la corrupción fueron una de las críticas sociales más mordaces de su tiempo. De 1918 a 1920 fue un destacado miembro del grupo de dadaístas (ver dadaísmo) de Berlín. Sus obras Das Grsicht der herrschenden Klasse [El rostro de la clase gobernante] (1921) y Ecce Homo (1922), compuestas por colecciones de dibujos que presentaban a codiciosos capitalistas que especulaban con la guerra y la decadencia social, le conquistaron fama internacional. En 1932 emigró a EE.UU., donde enseñó en la Art Students League de Nueva York, mientras seguía produciendo tiras cómicas, desnudos y paisajes para revistas.
